Bhagalpur: Dhahra village of Bhagalpur, Bihar is an exception in the whole Bhagalpur region. The village unlike others not only has a best male female sex ratio but also is the greenest area.
The village has a tradition of planting 10 mango trees on the birth of a girl child in the village. Further the villagers do not resort to female foeticide techniques rather consider the female child as an incarnations of Goddess Lakshmi- known as the goddess of wealth.
The mango trees are planted so that they add up to the family to not only support themselves but also at the time of the girl child’s marriage.
Thanks to the tradition of planting trees, the region has as many as 20,000 mango trees in and around the village which adds up to the total village income and supports the villagers.
Impressed by the tradition, Chief Minister- Nitish Kumar, also came to the village and planted a tree and ensured that a school especially for the girls will be built soon.
